RN/Cardiac sonographer

After high school, I attended UT and got a degree in Journalism. I was going to be an investigative reporter (because Watergate, you know). I quickly found out that wasn't what I was meant to do. After 2 years I returned to UT and got a degree in Nursing. I've always worked in cardiac/critical care, first in Knoxville, and then at St. Thomas hospital in Nashville since 1984. Currently teaching and working as a cardiac sonographer but looking forward to retirement. My husband and I have a blended family of 2 kids, 2 stepkids and 2 grandkids. Life has had a lot of ups and downs, but everything you do makes you what you are today. And life is good.

I was an AFS exchange student to ORHS in 1973-74, graduating with the class of 74. I stayed. After that year, I went back to my old school in Japan, where I got a BA in English Lit. I lived in the US again, in New York, 1978-79 82-84, and 89-93; also lived in London 86-89. I'm still in close contact with my host-family, the Hibbs family, and have been visiting them more than every few years, last time being this past March. The brand new world I had experienced at ORHS molded who I am today, and I'm very grateful for it. At the moment, I live in Tokyo and work at AFS/Japan, as a program staff looking after students who seek such experiences that I had 40 years ago.

I left OR after graduation and Tennessee shortly thereafter. Along with K. Noggle and others, I am a part of the Linden-Robertsville-ORHS cohort. The majority of my adult life has been spent in Utah with a short stint in the Bay Area (Palo Alto). After 20 years at the University of Utah, and feeling the need to be closer to our aging parents and kids whose careers took them back East, I accepted a position at the University of Alabama a few years ago (Go Vols!...though I remain a PAC 12 fan). It was a difficult move. We found it hard to leave the Rocky Mtns and the open vistas that define the terrain and living there; it changed us. It took a while to re-acclimate to the trees that grow so close to many of the roads here in the South, particularly the interstates. I have been married for 38+ years to a smart, attractive, and vivacious young lady. She is an accomplished musician (piano). I met Carol as an under-graduate. She is from Louisiana. We have two grown children and four grandchildren - all under the age of 4. They are tons of fun and bring us much joy. We are hoping for more! Like a homing pigeon, I’ve felt the need over the past 5-7 years to return and reconnect with my OR roots. Part of this need is a desire to get to know better many of my ORHS classmates who I knew only superficially in the 70s. I heard many interesting life journeys and stories at our last reunion. While I didn’t get to talk to everyone at our 40th, hearing these journeys/stories was indeed a highlight. I look forward experiencing the same next month. Thx to the organizing committee for taking the initiative to make this special event happen.... |
